Weekly Bulletin 3rd & 4th March2012

Grace in Sin out, Sin out Grace in!
This quote is from a Theology lecturer I had in the Seminary. It’s not a bad motto to live by.
This Sunday is the beginning of the Novena of Grace. The Novena of Grace originated in Naples in 1643, when a Jesuit was cured through the intercession of St Frances Xavier,(who was a Jesuit Priest) who promised that those who made the nine days of prayer in preparation for the anniversary of the canonisation of the saint would receive many graces and favours. Thus the name, Novena of Grace.
It was first held in Dublin in 1712, in the church at Mary’s Lane, now Halston St Parish. This year is the 300th anniversary. I’ve been doing a little work with Fr. Kevin from Bird Ave Parish and we hope to swap places during the Novena. Of course not every Parish has the blessing of having a Jesuit Priest (Fr. Alan Mowbray SJ), Bird Ave parish have a Jesuit House too.
As it is also the Year of the International Eucharistic Congress we hope to include Eucharist themes.
I find one phrase in the actual Novena Prayer particularly interesting and meaningful; “But if what I ask is not for the glory of God or for the good of my soul, obtain for me what is most conducive to both”. I think we could use this for all of our petitions to God.
The Novena begins on Sunday 4th and runs for nine days (as all Novena’s do!!).

Fr Philip Adm (Gracefully!)

Novena Grace Prayer: O most lovable and loving St. Francis Xavier, in union with you, I reverently adore the Divine Majesty. While joyfully giving thanks to God for the singular gifts of grace bestowed on you during your life and your gifts of glory after death, I beseech you with all my heart’s devotion to be pleased to obtain for me, through your efficacious intercession, the greatest of all blessings: the grace of living a holy life and dying a holy death. Moreover, I beg of you to obtain for me [mention here the spiritual or temporal favor you wish to obtain]. But if what I ask of you so earnestly does not tend to the glory of God and the great good of my soul, please obtain for me, I pray, what is more conducive for both. Amen.

Weekly Bulletin 25th & 26th February 2012

The World, the Flesh and Satan!!!

Traditionally these are the three sources of Sin. We are tempted to become so involved with the World (and our reputation in it) that we forget that the World is a gift from God. We are tempted to indulge the Flesh; our own physical comfort becomes overly important for us. Satan is not happy to have us get closer to God and live by Christian virtues.

The remedy for this three-fold temptation is the three-fold practice (especially at Lent), Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. We try to get to know Christ better as we pray, we Fast to show our bodies that we are in charge and that while we must take care of our bodies (the flesh) we also believe that we are more than our bodies (that is why we put ash on our foreheads on Ash Wednesday). We give alms (gifts to the poor) because we remember that others may not be as ‘comfortable’ as we are (Trocaire Boxes are available in the Church). We therefore relate to the World in a different way.

It’s a lifetime’s work to grow closer to Christ. Each Lent we take stock of our relationship with God and try to do better. Our Lenten programme this year is the Enneagram which we hope will enable us to get on better with each other. Monday Feb 27, March 5, 12 (skip Bank Holiday 19th) and conclude on Mon 26th, 8-10 pm All welcome!

Volunteering/participating in our community enables us to focus our lives on others, on the community and on God (The small ways are as important as the big). We are still looking for parishioners feed back on what is the most convenient time for Mass on Bank Holidays, (to date it looks like moving from 10 to 11).

And we are looking for new Readers and Ministers of the Eucharist for both evening Masses. It’s not about ‘Am I worthy enough (nobody is),’ it’s about ‘am I willing to be of service to my community at Milltown Church. Please do consider it and maybe contact me.
Fr Philip Adm (I can resist anything except Temptation.)

Thank you for the €1,538 which you donated to last Sunday’s collection for the Support of Priests of the Dioceses and for the Share Collection which amounted to €1,099.

Dates for your Diary!!!
Each year during Lent and Advent we have a series of lectures. And we hope to do the same this year, but with a difference! This Lent (Ash Wed is Feb 22nd) we are running the Enneagram.
So what’s the Enneagram? Well it’s a study of 9 personality types. There are different names given to the different types e.g. Perfectionist, Status seeker, Loyalist, Carer etc. So, it’s a way of getting to know yourself better, getting to know what makes you tick, what gives you energy or robs the energy/passion from you. It also shows how different types might clash and the negative side of the Personality Types. It is Lent after all! So we can learn about our Negative side and transform it.
It is, however, not designed to help you decide of other people’s type: the only one we can change is ourselves. Now, the important thing is that it’s a course, so if you sign up you’ll need to be able to go to the entire course. It’s over four Monday nights; one night builds on what was done the previous night.
It’s a bit of a change from our usual lectures but, let’s see how it goes. Ask around and see have any your friends done it; bring them along even if they have. The Dates for your Diary are: Feb 27th, March 5th, 12th (19th March is a Bank holiday) and 26th.

CHURCH UNITY WEEK

When I was seven years of age, I remember I put the question to my mother: ‘What are Protestants?’ In good biblical fashion she replied by way of a parable! She reminded me that as a young teacher in Limerick, she had been in digs at the house of a Mrs. Eakins who was a Baptist. My mother then continued with the following story:
One very wet Saturday morning her landlady had purchased a Fair Isle jumper for one of her several sons. Mrs. Eakins was a widow. She was a woman of modest means who would have been dependant for income on whatever rent two young teachers contributed for their keep in the Eakins home. On the day in question her son had donned his brand new garment for all to admire. A knock came to her door. Outside stood a poor woman accompanied by a ragged young boy, her son, who stood shivering in the rain .The shabbily dressed woman asked for alms. There and then Mrs. Eakins took the jumper from her own son and handed it to the poor woman.
“Now”, concluded my mother “in my experience that’s what Protestants are like”’.
The result of my enquiry meant that for me, for a long time afterwards, I believed that being a Protestant was to be a person who instinctively forfeited what they themselves could ill afford ,in order to bestow goods on others who were less fortunate still!
In retrospect, my mother’s story was not a bad first lesson in ecumenism. In my lifetime, our Catholic attitude towards Christians of other denominations has changed hugely. Gone is our suspicion of the quality of their faith. Our traditional,
‘superiority complex’ vis a vis Protestants of all shades, has long since blessedly dissolved. The Vatican Council’s Decree on Ecumenism and subsequent Papal teaching urge us to work and pray for Christian Unity. This echoes the words of Jesus Christ himself who prayed that all who bear the name Christian should be “one” (John 17:20). This goal, indeed this imperative, was most recently served at the gathering which took place in our church here in Milltown on Wednesday last. It was our parish’s privilege to host the Inter - Church liturgy which is organised annually by the Dublin Council of Churches, marking church Unity Week. The service was led by our own Archbishop Diarmuid and the Church of Ireland’s Archbishop Michael Jackson. It included representation of other Christian faith communities; all of whom shared hospitality at our Pastoral Centre following the celebration of God’s Word together. We give thanks for this warm and fruitful gathering.

Fr. Tom Stack

The Care and Repair programme (run by Age Action Ireland) uses a pool of trustworthy volunteers and handypersons to carry out minor repairs for older people. All volunteers are vetted and carry official Care and Repair identification cards. The service is free; you only pay for the materials used. For your bigger jobs, we maintain a register of reliable and honest tradespersons. We are also accepting requests for small gardening jobs. You can arrange to have a job done for you by phoning the Age Action Care and Repair number which is 01-4756989.

Weekly Bulletin 14th & 15th January 2012

Diocesan Pastoral Guidelines
Recently, each Parish in the Diocese has received ‘Directives and guidelines for Sacramental and Pastoral Practice’. While it might sound like a mouthful, these guidelines have come about in response to pastoral situations that are now common in Society, Diocese and Parish. I hope to give the important points in this Bulletin from time to time. And, as they often refer to Canon Law I’ll give the reference in the Code of Canon Law too.
Baptism: A proper application form for the Sacrament of Baptism in parishes is important and contains important information. The Form that we use in the Parish will need to be updated. The first issue to be looked at is Guardianship.
Guardianship describes the legal responsibility of parents to make decisions and perform duties in relation to their child’s upbringing. Married parents are automatically joint guardians of their children. Neither separation nor divorce changes this.
A father who is not married to the mother of his child does not have automatic guardianship rights in relation to that child. To achieve this, the mother must agree and they must apply jointly to the State.
Both parents should sign the application form, particularly if the parents are not married to each other. A copy of the Birth Certificate should accompany the application form. This ensures the accurate recording of the facts and that the child’s surname is the same in both Church and State records. The Place of Marriage should accompany the application form. This ensures that the guardianship is established
Godparents: the basic requirement for Baptism is one Sponsor. If there are two, they are to be male and female. One cannot have two male Godparents or two female Godparents. A Christian from another denomination cannot be a God parent/Sponsor, however they can be a Christian Witness at the Catholic Baptism, the child in such a case will still need a Catholic Sponsor/Godparent.
Place of Baptism: the normal place for Baptism is the parish Church in which the family is living/domiciled. With the permission of the Parish priest/Administrator the child can be baptised in a church of another parish. Baptisms are not allowed in any other location, such as private houses, hotels or religious Churches or Chapels.
To me these guidelines show that the Sacraments should be celebrated where the Faith Community worship, this is usually the local Parish Church.
