Prayer for the Child in the Womb
Lord Jesus, you are the source and lover of life.
Reawaken in us respect for every human life.
Help us to see in each child the marvellous
work of our Creator.
Open our hearts to welcome every child as a
unique and wonderful gift.
Guide the work of doctors, nurses and
midwives.
May the life of a mother and her baby in the
womb be equally cherished and respected.
Help those who make our laws to uphold the
uniqueness and sacredness of every human life,
from the first moment of conception to natural
death.
Give us wisdom and generosity to build a
society that cares for all.
Together with Mary, your Mother,
in whose womb you took on our human
nature,
Help us to choose life in every decision we
take.
We ask this in the joyful hope of eternal life
with you, and in the communion of the
Blessed Trinity.
Amen.

Age Action is a charity which promotes positive ageing and better policies and services for older people. Working with, and on behalf of, older people they aim to make Ireland the best place in the world in which to grow older. Printed below are details of one of the services that Age Action provides.
As we grow older basic household tasks can become very difficult to manage. People who have been house-proud all of their lives find themselves unable to maintain their homes. Even something as simple as changing a light bulb can become a major problem for an older person who is not in a position to climb on a chair to change the bulb. Other household tasks and moving furniture cause similar difficulties.
For those older people who are in the unfortunate position of not having family members calling, these tasks can become a source of great frustration. Isolation and loneliness are also major problems for older people. Ultimately these problems can make the difference between staying at home and moving to residential care.
The Care & Repair Programme was established by Age Action to carry out minor repairs for older and vulnerable people free of charge, to give them access to reliable tradesmen for larger jobs and to provide a befriending service. The vision of the programme is to enable older and vulnerable people to remain in their own homes, in their own communities, living as independently as possible, through the improvement of their housing conditions and their level of comfort, security and well-being.

Weekly Bulletin 20th & 21st July

The Word is Good!
The feedback from the families involved in the recent Baptism Pilot programme is very good. They report that the whole process made them feel very welcome, and helped them to understand the importance of Baptism and the connection with the Parish (Community of Faith).
Our findings now goes back to the Diocese and joins the feedback from the 9 other parishes, I expect a draft Diocesan Policy & Guidelines’ on Baptism will be forthcoming from Archbishop’s House in the autumn. In the meantime it’s worth looking at our current policy.
All Sacraments should happen with the Community of Faith present.
Our Baptisms usually take place once a month, on the first Saturday at 12.30. Occasionally we offer families a Sunday morning during Mass.
If a Milltown parishioner wants to have their child baptized in another parish then, we look at which parish will undertake the preparation and we give a letter of referral to the other parish.
If someone from another parish wants to have their child baptized in Milltown then we seek a letter from the local parish and check re preparation.
If a family has a relative or a friend who is a priest and they want him to do the Baptism, then they are welcome to join in our usual baptism ceremony (with the said priest). If this can’t be done or another date is the only one that suits, then the new date for their baptism becomes another date for Milltown parishioners, and the visiting priest includes the Milltown children in the Ceremony.
Occasionally, people from other parishes ask to use the Church for their own Baptism, and they want to bring ‘their own priest’. As they have no direct link/connection with the Community of faith in Milltown, The request is denied..
In the not so distant past, the National Culture did most of the handing on of the faith. This is no longer the case and there is a greater emphasis on the Parents and Parish Community handing on a living faith.
Fr. Philip
(It’s probably good for our own faith too!)

POPE John Paul II and POPE John XXIII are to be declared saints.
Pope Francis has approved a second miracle attributed to Pope John Paul 11, John Paul, a Pole who was elected pope in 1978 was the first non-Italian pope in 450 years. He died in 2005 and his elevation to sainthood ranks as the fastest in modern times. He will be remembered as the "globe-trotting pope," after having made more than 100 trips outside Italy. He is also credited with being instrumental in the fall of communism in Eastern Europe in 1989 because of his defence of the Solidarity Trade Union in his native Poland.

Pope John XXIII was head of the Catholic Church from 1958 to 1963. He was known as "Good Pope John" for his kindly demeanour and simplicity, attributes which many have likened to our current Pope Francis. The Italian born Angelo Roncalli led the Catholic Church toward major reforms by opening the Second Vatican Council in 1962,

Since his election in March Pope Francis has tried to instil a spirit of simplicity and reform in the Church. Regarding the canonisation of Pope John XX111 he has waived the customary rules requiring a second miracle after beatification.

The canonisation ceremonies, which are likely to bring hundreds of thousands to Rome, are expected later this year; perhaps in November. As our parish church here in Milltown is the only church in the country to have a shrine to Blessed John XX111 perhaps some parishioners might consider attending this occasion?

Weekly Bulletin 8th & 9th June

Back to the Future.
Milltown Parish is in the Donnybrook Deanery, one of the 16 in the Diocese. The Deaneries meet four times a year, and the Archbishop meets the Vicars Forane (Deanery leaders), in anticipation of these gatherings. The system goes back a long way in the Diocese and the Church. They form one of many ways that the Archbishop is in contact with the parishes.
Each Deanery has a representative on the Priest’s Council. This Council is more of a Counsel, its role etc. is laid down in Canon Law. For my sins, I’m the Donnybrook Deanery rep on the Priest’s council! We meet about 10 times a year from about 11 till 4pm. We met last Wed and the next meeting is in September. The Topics are very interesting and often help to look at the future and the Church of the Future.
Our Agenda varies from very pressing matters i.e. last year’s Eucharistic Congress, to looking at Catholic Schools in the future, to the welfare of Priest’s and the new translation of the Missal. Much of the work of the Council is done by sub-committees, between the actual meetings. Recently, we have looked at the functioning of the Deanery, and how can the system be used to help/co-ordinate the mission of the Diocese. In some Deaneries Parish Pastoral Council members come along, sometimes in financial matters, the members of the Parish Finance Committees attend too.
As most of the Deanery meetings happen in the morning or afternoon, there needs to be a change if the other groups come along as they usually aren’t free to meet during the working day. Thus our most recent topic of reflecting on the Deanery and how it works, and what shape the Deanery meeting/s will be in the next 10 or 20 years. It really is quite interesting!
