CHURCH UNITY WEEK

When I was seven years of age, I remember I put the question to my mother: ‘What are Protestants?’ In good biblical fashion she replied by way of a parable! She reminded me that as a young teacher in Limerick, she had been in digs at the house of a Mrs. Eakins who was a Baptist. My mother then continued with the following story:
One very wet Saturday morning her landlady had purchased a Fair Isle jumper for one of her several sons. Mrs. Eakins was a widow. She was a woman of modest means who would have been dependant for income on whatever rent two young teachers contributed for their keep in the Eakins home. On the day in question her son had donned his brand new garment for all to admire. A knock came to her door. Outside stood a poor woman accompanied by a ragged young boy, her son, who stood shivering in the rain .The shabbily dressed woman asked for alms. There and then Mrs. Eakins took the jumper from her own son and handed it to the poor woman.
“Now”, concluded my mother “in my experience that’s what Protestants are like”’.
The result of my enquiry meant that for me, for a long time afterwards, I believed that being a Protestant was to be a person who instinctively forfeited what they themselves could ill afford ,in order to bestow goods on others who were less fortunate still!
In retrospect, my mother’s story was not a bad first lesson in ecumenism. In my lifetime, our Catholic attitude towards Christians of other denominations has changed hugely. Gone is our suspicion of the quality of their faith. Our traditional,
‘superiority complex’ vis a vis Protestants of all shades, has long since blessedly dissolved. The Vatican Council’s Decree on Ecumenism and subsequent Papal teaching urge us to work and pray for Christian Unity. This echoes the words of Jesus Christ himself who prayed that all who bear the name Christian should be “one” (John 17:20). This goal, indeed this imperative, was most recently served at the gathering which took place in our church here in Milltown on Wednesday last. It was our parish’s privilege to host the Inter - Church liturgy which is organised annually by the Dublin Council of Churches, marking church Unity Week. The service was led by our own Archbishop Diarmuid and the Church of Ireland’s Archbishop Michael Jackson. It included representation of other Christian faith communities; all of whom shared hospitality at our Pastoral Centre following the celebration of God’s Word together. We give thanks for this warm and fruitful gathering.

Diocesan Pastoral Guidelines
Recently, each Parish in the Diocese has received ‘Directives and guidelines for Sacramental and Pastoral Practice’. While it might sound like a mouthful, these guidelines have come about in response to pastoral situations that are now common in Society, Diocese and Parish. I hope to give the important points in this Bulletin from time to time. And, as they often refer to Canon Law I’ll give the reference in the Code of Canon Law too.
Baptism: A proper application form for the Sacrament of Baptism in parishes is important and contains important information. The Form that we use in the Parish will need to be updated. The first issue to be looked at is Guardianship.
Guardianship describes the legal responsibility of parents to make decisions and perform duties in relation to their child’s upbringing. Married parents are automatically joint guardians of their children. Neither separation nor divorce changes this.
A father who is not married to the mother of his child does not have automatic guardianship rights in relation to that child. To achieve this, the mother must agree and they must apply jointly to the State.
Both parents should sign the application form, particularly if the parents are not married to each other. A copy of the Birth Certificate should accompany the application form. This ensures the accurate recording of the facts and that the child’s surname is the same in both Church and State records. The Place of Marriage should accompany the application form. This ensures that the guardianship is established
Godparents: the basic requirement for Baptism is one Sponsor. If there are two, they are to be male and female. One cannot have two male Godparents or two female Godparents. A Christian from another denomination cannot be a God parent/Sponsor, however they can be a Christian Witness at the Catholic Baptism, the child in such a case will still need a Catholic Sponsor/Godparent.
Place of Baptism: the normal place for Baptism is the parish Church in which the family is living/domiciled. With the permission of the Parish priest/Administrator the child can be baptised in a church of another parish. Baptisms are not allowed in any other location, such as private houses, hotels or religious Churches or Chapels.
To me these guidelines show that the Sacraments should be celebrated where the Faith Community worship, this is usually the local Parish Church.

Fr. Philip Adm (Guide?!)

Weekly Bulletin 7th & 8th January 2012

Just sit right down…….

Now that Christmas is over, I wonder would it be a good for us to write ourselves a letter. This letter might be marked ‘To be opened on 1st December 2012’. The content of the letter should contain a little post mortem on Christmas 2011.
So let’s look at Christmas 2011, before we forget all about it and possibly lose some insights that could help next year.
Did you buy a turkey that was too big? Did you think that you’d have feathers before you had eaten it all?
Did you accept or refuse invitations which, in hindsight, you would change next year? We don’t have to accept all the invites that we get, some of them occur more by duty or habit than by intention.
Did children ask for too much from Santa, who gave them the idea that Santa’s bag was bottomless?
Did you see too much of your family, extended or otherwise? Sometimes we go to one sibling one day and another the following day, only to meet the same people on both days.
Were you stuck watching the TV in one room, with granny not able to hear, your teenagers not interested in what was on and Dad or Mam trying to keep everybody happy? Its’ not a sin to have two TV’s even at Christmas! Some of the younger people could ‘travel the house’ with a round of chocolates.
Did you get lots of presents that you know you won’t use and you won’t get around to changing? Should they go to the Crosscare in the Pro-Cathedral?
Did you go to Church, were there too many or too few children at it? Was it overpowering or left you wanting to go to ‘real Mass’?
Did you forget/not get round to going to the Carol Service?
Don’t forget that the ‘Media’ depict Christmas as ‘all happy families’ sitting by a log fire with a flurry of snow, everybody blissfully happy. That’s not always the case. Christmas often magnifies how your situation is now. So if you’ve had bereavement, or you are alone then the emotions will be magnified. Conversely if you are just married or have recently had a ‘big happy event’ then these emotions/feelings will be magnified too.
So, sit right down and write yourself a letter (and you won’t have to ‘make believe’….), dated 1st Dec 2012 ‘It did come from you’

Fr. Philip Adm

Weekly Bulletin 31th Dec 2011 & 1st January 2012

Happy New Year (civil) for 2012

I have to confess that I’m a bit obsessed with the Crib and the Wise Men. In my home, as I was growing up my Dad always said that the Infant Jesus should not go into the Crib until Christmas Eve, AND that the Wise men should arrive on the 6th only. The decorations etc should come down on the 6th and the Crib should stay by it self for at least 6 days. It’s a gentle way of saying that the Nativity is the most important part of Christmas. It does of course require a second trip to the attic!
I’ve been known to raid peoples’ Cribs and remove the Wise men if they’ve arrived ‘early’.
Another tradition that I heard of a few years ago, is to allow the Wise men to travel around the house for the 12 days. They can go up stairs and, in and out of the bedrooms etc etc, this can be done particularly with young children, just before they go to bed.

New Year’s Resolution to Volunteer
The 50th International Eucharistic Congress office is delighted to announce that they have now over 700 registered volunteers from all over Ireland and continue their call for volunteers as more are needed. Recently, the first volunteer induction training sessions were held and there will be more induction training sessions in January. Why not make it your News Years’ resolution to volunteer. Register now and make a difference!

Also there will be an International Theology Symposium on “The Eucharistic Ecclesiology of Communion Fifty Years after Vatican II”. It takes place in St Patrick's College, Maynooth, from 6th until 9th June 2012, the week before the Eucharistic Congress itself, keep that date in your diary.

A particular thanks to all who helped with the Christmas Ceremonies. From stewards to collectors, Ministers of the Word and Ministers of the Eucharist, Flower arrangers to cleaners (They enjoy the title of CC ie Church Cleaner!!) The Altar servers turned up in abundance too. We think that the numbers attending were up this year. A particular thanks to Fr. Alan and the Focolaire group who assisted with the Vigil Mass at 6pm. It certainly was a celebration of the birth of Christ. The Carol singing enhanced all our liturgies. I’m looking forward to seeing all the colouring of the Nativity scene which were given out at Christmas; don’t forget to get them back to before the feast of Epiphany.

Weekly Bulletin 24th & 25th December 2011

The Twelve days of Christmas

Have you ever wondered about where the 12 Days of Christmas comes from, I recently received an email with what looks like a reasonable explanation.

From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember.
-The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.
-Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.
-Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.-
-The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John.
-The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the Old Testament.
-The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.
-Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit--Prophesy, Serving,
Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.
-The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.
-Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit--Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control.
-The ten lords a-leaping were the Ten Commandments.
-The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.
-The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles' Creed.
Fr. Philip Adm. (John Kelly, eat your heart out!!)
