Weekly Bulletin 5th & 6th May

Next Sunday May 13th the R.C. Children of Alexandra College will receive their First Communion at 10 am Mass. It is a particularly special day for them, for their families and for us their Parish family. They participated wonderfully in the ‘Do this in Memory’ programme. It is wonderful to accompany the girls on their journey. We’ll have a practice during the week and then we can relax till Sun 13th. When I was looking at some of the topics to be covered in the practice, I noticed one in particular. Training them to receive Communion on their hands; First things first, they/ we don’t have to receive on our hands; it’s not more or less reverent than receiving on the tongue. However it does require a little more skill. To receive on our hands we should first check that they are clean enough for us to eat a meal without washing them (We are actually at The Banquet!). The hand that you write with should be placed underneath. The other hand goes on top making a throne, to receive the King of life. Some people say that we can make a cross with our hands, personally I prefer the Throne.
Having received on the hand, we then take one step to Left or Right and STOP. The underneath hand is used to place the Host in the mouth. If you like to bless yourself, then it’s better to do this before receiving, not after. Only when the host is placed on the tongue do we continue back to our places. It’s interesting, sometimes people bow to the Tabernacle, which might be empty, just after they have placed the Host on their tongue! Let’s remember the Girls in our Prayers, and remember our own First Communion Day.

Fr. Philip Adm (if your memory is that good?!)

MORAL HAZARD

Have you noticed the phrase ‘Moral Hazard’ being used a lot recently? I seem to hear Pat Kenny, among others, use it a lot, often when they are talking about negative equity and mortgage/debt forgiveness. The hazard being: if people who are seriously in debt are forgiven their debt too easily, then others might not make a realistic effort to clear their own debts, in the hope that they too will be forgiven their debts. The kindness might be counterproductive! (Moral Hazard) The concept seems to have suddenly come to the minds of people. This is my real surprise! Surely most people know the expressions ‘being cruel to be kind’, tough love even the Old fashioned one of ‘sparing the rod and spoiling the child’. We’ve all been in a dilemma as to what is the truly kind response in different circumstances. Often in helping people with addictions the whole family or group is brought in to the full picture to help them understand that there is Moral Hazard at play. The concept of enabling was for me very new when I heard it first. So, if the person living with the alcoholic keeps on tidying up after them. If they clear out the empties, fix the broken chair, subsidies the ‘offender’ they are actually making things worse or at least not helping because they hide the consequences of the bad behavior. (Moral Hazard)If our Social Welfare system gets to the stage where people can’t afford to take a job because they’d loose income then we enable or possibly encourage people to stay on social welfare. (Moral Hazard)For the Christian we often feel that we should give to others, but maybe our giving has to be very precise and exact. It may even call us to get more involved in the care of others.

Fr. Philip (Hazard warning!)

Weekly Bulletin 21st & 22nd April

Evening Retreat
I have a vivid memory of an English teacher at school focusing on the word Retreat in a poem. He explained that the word might mean to retreat in battle or to go on retreat and look inward. It took me only 15 years to come to the conclusion that it is the same word. When we retreat in battle we are pulling back from our act of war/aggression, when we go on retreat we pull back from the outside world. The whole idea is to stop and change course or change our mind.
The big treat in store for our Catholic community this year is the Eucharistic Congress next June 10th to 17th. You may have noticed a big sign on the Church boiler-house that we are a Host Parish for the Congress. This means that we are hosting the French speaking community for Mass on Monday 11th June. There will be Mass at 9.30am in French (they will have their own Chaplain!). Also the Church will be made available to them for some of the workshops on two or three evenings of the week of the Congress. More about this later! All are welcome.
Our big event as a Parish, for the Congress, is the Retreat Evening on Mon 30th April 7.30 – 10 pm. The Parish centre will be open and people will be able to stay for all or some of the evening. The Congress theme is ‘Communion with Christ and with one and other’. Our evening will begin with a session from some teenagers on their experiences of bringing help to communities in the Third World. The second part will be a guest speaker, a sort of prayerful lecture. We conclude with a Reflection time of Exposition of the Blessed
Sacrament and we’ll conclude with Benediction.Personally, I’m looking forward to an evening OUT of the Hurdy Gurdy!

Fr. Philip (It’ll be a reTreat for us all)
