Weekly Bulletin 9th & 10th June

Equality of the Sexes
I picked up a recent article from the internet about the advantages of being a man. It’s quite funny, but as usual it also has a lot to say.
• Your last name stays put.
• The garage is yours.
• Wedding plans take care of themselves.
• Car mechanics tell you the truth.
• You don’t care if no-one notices your new haircut.
• Same work.....more pay.
• Your pals can be trusted never to trap you with “So, notice anything different?”
• New shoes don’t cut, blister, or mangle your feet.
• One mood, all the time.
• Phone conversations are over in 30 seconds flat.
• A week’s holiday requires one suitcase.
• You can leave the hotel bed unmade.
• Yon don’t have to clean the house/apartment if the maid is coming.
• You can drop by to see a friend without having to bring ‘a little gift’.
• You can quietly watch a football game with a friend for hours without thinking “He must be mad at me”.
• You almost never have strap problems in public.
• The same hairstyle last years, maybe decades.
• You can do Christmas shopping for 25 relatives, on Dec 24th, in 45 minutes.
Have you recognised yourself: be you man or woman!?
How did you get there? What keeps you there? Do you want to change? And if so, how can you?
Fr. Philip Adm (Still musing!)

CHURCH SPEAKERS IN THE PARISH CENTRE
It’s a pity to see parents with their children standing in the porch during Mass. Why not pop over to the Parish Pastoral Centre if you feel your children need a little break? With the help of our newly installed speakers you will still be able to hear what is happening in the church. Feel free to return to the church after your children have had a little break.
Fr. Philip Bradley

Weekly Bulletin 2nd & 3rd June

What is a Eucharistic Congress (IEC)?
A Eucharistic Congress is an international gathering of people which aims to:
1) Promote an awareness of the central place of the Eucharist in the life and mission of the Catholic Church.
2) Improve our understanding and celebration of the liturgy
3) Draw attention to the social dimension of the Eucharist (i.e., the responsibility which we have to live in the spirit of communion and self-gift that we celebrate).
The Congress normally takes place every four years. The daily celebration of the Eucharist is at the very heart of the Congress. The wider programme of the Congress includes other liturgical events, cultural events, catechesis and testimonies, and workshops during the week of the Congress.

Previous Congresses
The work of the Congresses began in France in 1881 as a fruit of the Eucharistic apostolate of St Peter-Julian Eymard.
In the aftermath of the Second Vatican Council, the Eucharistic Congresses, in addition to promoting a deeper understanding of and participation in the celebration of the Mass, sought to focus attention of the essential link between the Eucharist and the service of those who are poor and oppressed. The Synod of Bishops in 2005 expressed this responsibility as follows:
‘Before the Lord of history and the future of the world, the suffering of the poor, the ever more numerous victims of injustice and all the forgotten people of the earth cannot be alien to the celebration of the Eucharistic mystery, which commits baptised people to work for justice and the transformation of the world in an active and conscious way’.
The first Congress was held in Lille, France in 1881; Dublin hosted the 31st IEC, 21-26 June 1932 and Dublin hosts the Fiftieth International Eucharistic Congress June 10-17 2012.

EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS PRAYER
Lord Jesus you were sent by the father to gather together those who are scattered.
You came among us, doing good and bringing healing, announcing the Word of salvation
and giving the Bread which lasts forever.
Be our companion on life’s pilgrim way.
May your Holy Spirit inflame our hearts,
enliven our hope and open our minds, so that together with our sisters and brothers in faith we may recognise you in the Scriptures
and in the breaking of bread.
May your Holy Spirit transform us into one body and lead us to walk humbly on the earth,
in justice and love, as witnesses of your resurrection.
In communion with Mary, whom you gave us as our Mother at the foot of the cross, through you may all praise, honour and blessing be to the Father in the Holy Spirit and in the Church, now and forever.
Amen

You’ve done it again!!!!!!
The parishioners of Milltown have done it again; you’ve outdone yourselves in generosity! Brian Buggy spoke at Masses last week-end about the work done by Vita. He mentioned that last year the collection was €2,700, this year the collection to date is €3,060. In any financial climate this is a very generous response, but in the present Financial Climate this response is wonderful!
The name "Vita" means "Way of Life" which reflects Vita's goal to support local communities to build sustainable livelihoods and to become leaders of their own development. It was founded in 1989 by the late Fr Kevin Doheny CSSp. Vita works with local staff in Ethiopia, implementing a wide range of projects to empower communities to produce more food, earn an income and become self reliant.
The appeal last weekend focussed on the potato. (The humble spud, we Irish know a thing or two about ‘spuds’!) Development of potato farming amongst the rural communities in Ethiopia where Vita works is a four year project which ultimately aims to reach 5,000 farmers.
Vita members are working with farming families, providing seed potatoes. These potatoes are the product of research – they are disease resistant, they produce better crops. 1 bag = 10 bags in 6 months. The farmer returns 2 bags and uses the 8 for food and market. The 2 bags go to a seed store (funded by Vita) for the next crop - so this is sustainable. The bag of potatoes is not a hand out. It is repaid. The farmers’ income will go from €50 to €500 per year which makes a huge difference to that family. Vita is not about giving out food to hungry people, they support people in Ethiopia to grow their own food on a sustainable basis.
Fr. Philip Adm

The appliance of Science.

I’m not sure which of the ‘white goods’ suppliers use this phrase but it’s catchy. In Milltown we have recently connected the Church’s P.A. system to the system in the Parish Centre. This means that if there were a huge number of people in the Church, we could have the overflow in the Parish Centre. It also would help if, for example, there was a ‘cuppa’ after a particular Mass/Celebration: the hospitality group would be able to hear what is going on in the Church and know when to ‘wet the tea’ etc. It doesn’t work the other way round so, the P.A. system from the Parish Centre won’t be heard in the Church.

Occasionally, I meet parents whose ‘little darlings’ are a bit noisy and they feel that it’s easier to take them out of the Church for a while (the beautiful echo in the Church, means that little feet or shouts can be heard everywhere). It’s a pity to see parents who bring their children to Mass out in the Porch. So, if this does happen, (sometimes the ‘little ones’ know just when to tantrum!) parents are welcome to go over to the Parish Centre and hear the Mass from there. And, when your child has calmed down you can head back to the Church.

And, just while I’m mentioning the Children, as you may know we have had a few occasions when there has been colouring for them at Mass. We hope to grow this a little. We have had one particular ‘wipe clean’ colouring book suggested. If we bought lots of them, would parents be interested in picking them up. It might be a good bit of work to wipe them clean. Any suggestions or idea?
Fr. Philip Adm (Child at heart!)

Thank you for the €1,628 which you donated to last Sunday’s collection for the Support of Priests of the Dioceses and for the Share Collection which amounted to €1088.

Welcome to the Cor Na Nog Choir who are singing at today’s 10am Mass. This choir is sponsored by R.T.E. and is conducted by Mary Amond O’ Brien.

There will be an outdoor collection in aid of Vita after all Masses this weekend. Vita works in Ethiopia assisting rural families to improve their standard of living by providing training in agricultural methods which in turn leads to better food and a sustainable lifestyle.

Thanks to parishioners who have already handed in their Easter Dues.

The Sisters of the Holy Rosary Missionaries wish to thank parishioners for the €785 which they collected at their recent outdoor collection.

The S.M.A. PILGRIMAGE TO KNOCK will takes place on Saturday 26th May. Further details of this pilgrimage are available from S.M.A. House, 4968162.

Age Action Ireland will have an outdoor collection after all Masses this weekend. Please support this organisation as many of our parishioners’ avail of the services they offer.

We are celebrating ‘Significant Wedding Anniversaries’ at the 6pm Vigil Mass on Saturday next, 26th May. We would like to hear from couples who are celebrating 25, 40, 45, 50 & 60 years marriage this year. Please let us know your name and we’ll have a Certificate of congratulation from the Parish at the Mass and even, a ‘cuppa’ in the Parish Centre too. What if you’re widowed? Well, feel very welcome to come along too, while it might be a ‘bitter sweet’ occasion, we will remember your loved one and the commitment that you made all those years ago.
The liturgy group will prepare the Mass with Prayer of the Faithful, reflection, maybe even symbols of commitment to Marriage as the Mass begins. If you have a particular reading/reflection from your ‘big day’ maybe we could use it too, and don’t forget to bring the family. It is wonderful to think that your ‘ordinary’ marriage might be THE example that a neighbour or neighbour’s child could aspire to.

The Society of Saint Vincent De Paul is holding its Annual Clothing Appeal in this parish on June 2nd and 3rd. Distribution of empty collection bags will take place on next Saturday and Sunday May 26th & 27th.

MESSAGE OF THANKS TO THOSE WHO CONTRIBUTED TO THE NATIONAL COLLECTIONS FOR THE
50TH INTERNATIONAL EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS

The Bishops of Ireland are deeply grateful for the donations given to the four National Collections which have been taken up since 2009 for the 50th International Eucharistic Congress.
Your support means that Ireland is able to extend a warm welcome to visitors to Dublin from Ireland as well as from all over the world for this very important event in the life of the Catholic Church in Ireland, which will take place from 10th to 17 June.
There are so many initiatives underway in parishes and communities throughout the Archdiocese of Dublin in preparation for this significant occasion, which has as its theme, The Eucharist - Communion with Christ and with one another. I wish to express my appreciation for these initiatives.
The Congress can be for the Church in Ireland a moment of renewal and I would ask you all to keep the event in your prayers.
If you would like to offer further financial support to the Congress, please give your donation to your local priest. Your generosity is deeply appreciated and it is the intention to publish the full financial details of the Congress in due course.
Diarmuid Martin

Amen
