Prayer for the Child in the Womb
Lord Jesus, you are the source and lover of life.
Reawaken in us respect for every human life.
Help us to see in each child the marvellous
work of our Creator.
Open our hearts to welcome every child as a
unique and wonderful gift.
Guide the work of doctors, nurses and
midwives.
May the life of a mother and her baby in the
womb be equally cherished and respected.
Help those who make our laws to uphold the
uniqueness and sacredness of every human life,
from the first moment of conception to natural
death.
Give us wisdom and generosity to build a
society that cares for all.
Together with Mary, your Mother,
in whose womb you took on our human
nature,
Help us to choose life in every decision we
take.
We ask this in the joyful hope of eternal life
with you, and in the communion of the
Blessed Trinity.
Amen.

Age Action is a charity which promotes positive ageing and better policies and services for older people. Working with, and on behalf of, older people they aim to make Ireland the best place in the world in which to grow older. Printed below are details of one of the services that Age Action provides.
As we grow older basic household tasks can become very difficult to manage. People who have been house-proud all of their lives find themselves unable to maintain their homes. Even something as simple as changing a light bulb can become a major problem for an older person who is not in a position to climb on a chair to change the bulb. Other household tasks and moving furniture cause similar difficulties.
For those older people who are in the unfortunate position of not having family members calling, these tasks can become a source of great frustration. Isolation and loneliness are also major problems for older people. Ultimately these problems can make the difference between staying at home and moving to residential care.
The Care & Repair Programme was established by Age Action to carry out minor repairs for older and vulnerable people free of charge, to give them access to reliable tradesmen for larger jobs and to provide a befriending service. The vision of the programme is to enable older and vulnerable people to remain in their own homes, in their own communities, living as independently as possible, through the improvement of their housing conditions and their level of comfort, security and well-being.

Weekly Bulletin 20th & 21st July

The Word is Good!
The feedback from the families involved in the recent Baptism Pilot programme is very good. They report that the whole process made them feel very welcome, and helped them to understand the importance of Baptism and the connection with the Parish (Community of Faith).
Our findings now goes back to the Diocese and joins the feedback from the 9 other parishes, I expect a draft Diocesan Policy & Guidelines’ on Baptism will be forthcoming from Archbishop’s House in the autumn. In the meantime it’s worth looking at our current policy.
All Sacraments should happen with the Community of Faith present.
Our Baptisms usually take place once a month, on the first Saturday at 12.30. Occasionally we offer families a Sunday morning during Mass.
If a Milltown parishioner wants to have their child baptized in another parish then, we look at which parish will undertake the preparation and we give a letter of referral to the other parish.
If someone from another parish wants to have their child baptized in Milltown then we seek a letter from the local parish and check re preparation.
If a family has a relative or a friend who is a priest and they want him to do the Baptism, then they are welcome to join in our usual baptism ceremony (with the said priest). If this can’t be done or another date is the only one that suits, then the new date for their baptism becomes another date for Milltown parishioners, and the visiting priest includes the Milltown children in the Ceremony.
Occasionally, people from other parishes ask to use the Church for their own Baptism, and they want to bring ‘their own priest’. As they have no direct link/connection with the Community of faith in Milltown, The request is denied..
In the not so distant past, the National Culture did most of the handing on of the faith. This is no longer the case and there is a greater emphasis on the Parents and Parish Community handing on a living faith.
Fr. Philip
(It’s probably good for our own faith too!)

POPE John Paul II and POPE John XXIII are to be declared saints.
Pope Francis has approved a second miracle attributed to Pope John Paul 11, John Paul, a Pole who was elected pope in 1978 was the first non-Italian pope in 450 years. He died in 2005 and his elevation to sainthood ranks as the fastest in modern times. He will be remembered as the "globe-trotting pope," after having made more than 100 trips outside Italy. He is also credited with being instrumental in the fall of communism in Eastern Europe in 1989 because of his defence of the Solidarity Trade Union in his native Poland.

Pope John XXIII was head of the Catholic Church from 1958 to 1963. He was known as "Good Pope John" for his kindly demeanour and simplicity, attributes which many have likened to our current Pope Francis. The Italian born Angelo Roncalli led the Catholic Church toward major reforms by opening the Second Vatican Council in 1962,

Since his election in March Pope Francis has tried to instil a spirit of simplicity and reform in the Church. Regarding the canonisation of Pope John XX111 he has waived the customary rules requiring a second miracle after beatification.

The canonisation ceremonies, which are likely to bring hundreds of thousands to Rome, are expected later this year; perhaps in November. As our parish church here in Milltown is the only church in the country to have a shrine to Blessed John XX111 perhaps some parishioners might consider attending this occasion?

Weekly Bulletin 8th & 9th June

Back to the Future.
Milltown Parish is in the Donnybrook Deanery, one of the 16 in the Diocese. The Deaneries meet four times a year, and the Archbishop meets the Vicars Forane (Deanery leaders), in anticipation of these gatherings. The system goes back a long way in the Diocese and the Church. They form one of many ways that the Archbishop is in contact with the parishes.
Each Deanery has a representative on the Priest’s Council. This Council is more of a Counsel, its role etc. is laid down in Canon Law. For my sins, I’m the Donnybrook Deanery rep on the Priest’s council! We meet about 10 times a year from about 11 till 4pm. We met last Wed and the next meeting is in September. The Topics are very interesting and often help to look at the future and the Church of the Future.
Our Agenda varies from very pressing matters i.e. last year’s Eucharistic Congress, to looking at Catholic Schools in the future, to the welfare of Priest’s and the new translation of the Missal. Much of the work of the Council is done by sub-committees, between the actual meetings. Recently, we have looked at the functioning of the Deanery, and how can the system be used to help/co-ordinate the mission of the Diocese. In some Deaneries Parish Pastoral Council members come along, sometimes in financial matters, the members of the Parish Finance Committees attend too.
As most of the Deanery meetings happen in the morning or afternoon, there needs to be a change if the other groups come along as they usually aren’t free to meet during the working day. Thus our most recent topic of reflecting on the Deanery and how it works, and what shape the Deanery meeting/s will be in the next 10 or 20 years. It really is quite interesting!

Weekly Bulletin 25th & 26th May

With great Joy....
During Rite of Reception (in the Baptism ceremony) the Priest says to the child “the Christian community welcomes you with great Joy” the only problem is that when a baptism takes place on a Saturday morning the Christian Community isn’t there!
Many parishioners have commented on the Baptism Pilot programme, on behalf of the Diocese, which took place during Eastertide. You may have noticed that we had the Rite of Reception at one Mass with the actual conferring of the Sacrament two weeks later. Our next task is to send our feed-back to the Diocese and await the production of a Diocesan policy or guidelines. Having the ceremony over different Sundays means that, although the Baptisms do take place during Mass it doesn’t prolong it. We renew the Baptism promises in place of the Creed, and use the prayer of the faithful from the Baptism Rite.
I imagine that the Diocesan guidelines will suggest that a least the Rite of Reception will take place during Mass, it is a great Joy to have new members joining our community/parish.

More joy! At the 11.30 Mass on Sunday 9th June, there will be a celebration to mark particular Marriage anniversaries, (Silver, Ruby, Gold and Diamond). So do let us know if you’re one of the lucky couples, we’d like to make a little fuss of you and congratulate you on the day (names to Parish Office or Fr. Philip).
On September 1st at the 10 am Mass we hope to have Anointing of the Sick in anticipation of the Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes (7-12th). The idea is that we will accompany the Pilgrimage from a distance. At the Mass we will have a box for petitions to be brought to Lourdes. More on this later.

Weekly Bulletin 18th & 19th May

Paws a while!
I’m not a dog lover but I have a friend whose porch mat has a graphic of four dog’s paws, which welcomes the visitor by saying paws a while, it’s a call to Pause a while!

Pausing is so important for us all. In the Celtic Tiger era, we were very busy, now, many are distracted and under immense financial pressure. We’re still under time pressure, often because the ‘Job’ is demanding so much more of us,( for less money).

In the news last week end we heard of the ‘Darkness into Light’ fund raiser for Pieta House, a Charity which helps people with Suicidal ideation and Self harm. 40,000 people walked! A couple of weeks ago we heard of a High Court ruling on Assisted Suicide. And the death of a terminal ill youth who while ill pleaded with his peers to value life.

I recently found an old newspaper clipping from the Irish Times letters page from 2005 by Angela McNamara in which she gave an opinion on why Ireland was close to top of the world list for youth suicide. She says:
• In affluent homes, everyone in the family has too much of the unnecessary and little of the gentle, relaxed family togetherness. Children are over-indulged Parents no longer know how to reward or punish appropriately.
• Parents fear to be seen smacking children. Children kick and their parents.
• Having to do without anything is seen as intolerable failure; failure is misunderstood.
• There is confusion between what tragedy is and what mere inconvenience is.
• Pain is not seen as a normal part of life, which it is.

Maybe we can pause and see if the list still applies or if we can produce a more up to date one.

Fr. Philip (www.Pieta.ie www.Smaritans.org)

Weekly Bulletin 11th & 12th May

Bags of wind
One could be forgiven for believing that the manager of a certain football club was actually dead. Virtually all Thursday, we’ve had the top of the News reported that Joe Blogs has said this and Mary Murphy has said that! There have been lists of His achievements and the different people he treated well or badly. What would the Football world look like had he not been there? Will there ever be the like of him again? The list of achievements seems to be enormous. It’s been like a long Eulogy (a song of praise for the deceased)

I’m not even an ABU (Anyone but United) person. I don’t even have the interest to argue any point. In fact on several occasions I’ve been reported as defining a football game as ‘grown men kicking around a leather bag of wind’. The reaction is great, and quite often brings out the pro and anti-football feelings that may be hidden. I often feel that the Catholic Church is like a football match- there are 50,000 supporters in the stands needing some exercise and a team of 11 (?) on the pitch needing some rest!

Back to eulogies, when I mention eulogies at funeral masses, it too brings out the pro and anti-feelings from people. Of course the correct place for a eulogy is at the graveside. It’s an issue that raises its head from time to time. The Dublin Diocese seems to have no particular policy on Eulogies to date.

I was recently given a booklet (Praying a farewell) from the Diocese of Cork and Ross which includes many resources for ’Praying a farewell’. There are readings and sample prayer of the faithful, and it concludes with a number of questions re Cremation, Mass verses Memorial Service etc. I’ll bring them to you in future editorials. Watch this space!

Weekly Bulletin 4th & 5th May

Deck-chairs and Life-rafts.
Believe it or not, some people have already filled in their Census forms and returned them through the post. You may have noticed that the post is paid by the parish (the Licensee). The beauty here is that we are charged an annual fee for the license and then we’re charged for only the actual envelopes used. This is the first part of the Census, the second phase will be in the Autumn, when we will be looking for volunteers to call to households who haven’t fill in a form. More about that in August!
While we are gathering information on parishioners, we are also asking parishioners for their ideas. The ‘info stuff’ is on the front of the form and your ideas, in response to a number of questions are on the back. It will require some thinking and creativity, and it will require us as a parish to see what initiatives are possible too.
I often talk about the ‘five year plan’ at the Parish Pastoral Council, by this I hope to focus on where we are going as a parish. Are we doing the right things to enable a sense of community etc in the Parish. Some management consultant, whose name I can’t remember says, ‘to be efficient is to do the thing right, to be effective is to do the right thing’ the chap who was stacking deck-chairs on the Titanic may well have been efficient: he may have been arranging a lot of them per hour, but to be effective in saving himself and others he should have been breaking them up and making a raft.
In five years time, what do we want the experience of a visitor to the parish to be? Will they experience a sense of welcome and joy in our Church whether there is Mass on or not.
The Baptism Pilot that we are doing with three families, as part of a group of 10 parishes in the Diocese, is another way of planning for the future.
So, keep the forms coming, don’t forget to fill in the back of the form, and enjoy reading the history and information on the Parish Pastoral Centre too!

Fr.Philip Adm (fully in my Senses!)

Baptism pilot programme.
On Easter Sunday I wrote about the Pilot programme for Baptism. Here are some of the details that we hope to follow. It will be slightly different for each of the Parishes involved. We hope to do as much as we can in Milltown.
The first meeting involves Meeting and welcoming the parents who are presenting a child for baptism. Each family will have a ‘companion’ from the parish Baptism Team who will be their point of contact through the process.
Preparing the Sunday Mass community to welcome the new members who will be baptised (Sundays April 14, 21).
•At our Mass on April 28, the families will be introduced to and welcomed by the community.
•At our Mass on May 5, the families will again be present, as we all reflect together on the meaning of baptism.
•Over these two weeks and the following week, the parents will take part together in three one-hour sessions. These are designed to support and empower them in their role of accompanying their child on the journey of faith.
•Celebration of Baptism at our Mass on Sunday May 19, the Feast of Pentecost.

Weekly Bulletin 6th & 7th April

Its’ where you live NOW!
Readers may remember in previous articles I have written about WEDDINGS and where the couples go to have their Wedding Papers prepared/Marriage preparation. Well, the word hasn’t gotten out there yet!!
Often people enquire about getting a ‘letter of freedom’ or ‘a letter of release’. A ‘letter of freedom’ is a specific form, often required as one of the documents needed as part of the Wedding Papers/Pre-Nuptial Enquiry Form. This form (one is done for each party) has two parts. The first one is informational, Address, place of Baptism and Confirmation etc. The second part is completed after an ‘Appropriate course of Instruction’.
Couples living in Milltown are expected to do an ACCORD Pre-Marriage Course. It doesn’t matter where they are getting married. It’s all the same if they are marrying in Cork or Hong Kong. Accord, an agent of the Bishop’s conference, is the only course provider that fully satisfies the requirements laid down by the said Irish Bishop’s Conference.
To date in Ireland, parishes are determined by territory. To the best of my knowledge, the only non-territorial parish in the Diocese is the parish of the Travelling People!
This Geography applies to Baptism as well; the local Parish is the place to go. Occasionally, people (who have moved to another parish) request a letter from Milltown parish because that’s where their children were baptised. However, we’re back to ‘where you live now’, not where you were baptised. It’s regarded as particularly bad manners to Baptise or minister to a parishioner of another Parish without first getting in contact with the clergy of the other Parish.
Fr. Philip Adm
(No Local Parishioner Tax yet!)

Weekly Bulletin 30th & 31st March

CELEBRATING BAPTISM
This Eastertide (between Easter Sunday and Pentecost) Milltown Parish will be part of a Pilot programme for Baptism preparation. About 10 other parishes in the Diocese are involved in the Pilot. I jokingly call it the ‘bells and whistles version’! It is, of course, much more.

Baptism is about GRACE. It celebrates our beauty and dignity in the eyes of God. It’s about rejoicing in the graced individual each one of us is in Christ.

Baptism is about COMMUNITY. It welcomes each person as a member of the Christian community. It is the first step of our entering into the community of faith.

Baptism is about NOW. It is about who I am and who we are, our new identity in Christ – much more than a distant memory. It is what we try to live out of each day, individually and together.

We are trying to bring out this meaning more and more. And so we are developing a new way of preparing for Baptism and celebrating Baptism.

In this new way, we are putting a big emphasis on
-The role of the whole Christian community – because Baptism is about the community welcoming a cherished new member;

-The role of the parents – because Baptism is about the gift they are to their children and what they have to offer in their children’s growth as Christians.
