Eating Fish on Fridays
The media coverage of the Sevita Halapanavar case and the ‘expert group’ on abortion has calmed down recently. I have noticed in myself a reticence to say much/anything about the issue. Thinking about it I discover that I imagine someone will say “you’re a man”, or “sure you’re a priest, what would you know?!” The subtext here is that only those who have direct experience about an issue should have a say/opinion.

Now, on the ‘Abortion’ issue, if you take the above to an extreme then only a woman of child bearing age has any authority to express an opinion. Men might only have an opinion vicariously. And that would be nonsense.

The ‘Abortion issue’ is primarily a justice issue, Justice for the pregnant woman and justice for the child in the womb! To me the key issue is when does a human life start, is the foetus a human-being? If not, when does it gain this human being status?

Somewhat simplistically: If it’s a woman’s right to choose, then if the foetus is female then what choice does the ‘woman in the womb’ gets?! Once we accept that the child in the womb is a human being then we must give equal right to mother and foetus.

The Catholic Church has never asked us to eat fish on Fridays, she did ask us not to eat meat. The Catholic Church has never said that the life of the foetus is more important than the mother. The two lives are equal.

THE LITURGICAL YEAR OF COLOUR!

The Church has its own calendar. The year begins on the first Sunday of Advent (four Sundays before Christmas Day).
•In the Season of Advent, purple vestments are worn.
•In the Season of Christmas, white vestments are worn. This season usually lasts for about three Sundays.
•Then Ordinary Time begins (this is sometimes called Sundays throughout the Year). Green vestments are worn.
•Lent interrupts Ordinary Time. Purple vestments are worn.
•The Season of Easter follows; during this time, the vestments are white.
•Pentecost Sunday brings the Season of Easter to an end. Red vestments are worn.
•After Pentecost, Ordinary Time re-starts, and the green vestments are used again. There are 33 or 34 Sundays in Ordinary Time.
•The Last Sunday in Ordinary Time is the celebration of Christ the King: white vestments are worn. This marks the end of the Church's year.
The Lectionary: This is a large book which contains the Readings from the Bible which are included in the Liturgy of the Word at Mass throughout the Liturgical Year. There are three Lectionaries used. The Red Lectionary is read from on Sundays during Advent, Christmas Time, Lent and Easter Time. The biggest is the Blue Lectionary which contains all the readings for weekdays and Saints feast days. And finally the Beige/Brown Lectionary has the readings that are used for Baptism, Confirmation, funerals, weddings and so on.

Weekly Bulletin 17th & 18 November

Early and often!!

We were delighted to be a voting station in the Children’s referendum. It’s the first time that the Parish pastoral Centre was used for voting. It gave us an opportunity to show off the Centre and have tea and coffee available all day. Many people came in with no clue about the Centre and seemed quite impressed.

I regard myself as a tactical voter. I initially presumed that the referendum would be passed (my thinking was that any child who is abandoned by his/her parents should be able to be adopted), so I’d be glad that the referendum would be carried! When the discussions went on, I got more annoyed with what seemed to be muddying of the waters. I then decided I’d vote NO so that when the referendum was passed it wouldn’t be passed by a huge majority and so those in charge might take more care of referenda and children’s rights in the future.

As I got further confused I decided to look at the Referendum information. I couldn’t find where the ‘regardless of the martial status of the parents’ seemed to change anything as the info didn’t say that marital status was a problem to having a child adopted. (Are you confused? I was!)

Then came the Supreme Court decision about the 1.1 Mil of taxpayers (I’m one of those!) money miss –spent.

With Barnardo’s etc recommending a yes vote I still wanted it passed but, now with reservation. So I decided to vote NO in the hope that the lack of a good majority would get the Government to take some for the confusion and to put them on their toes re children’s rights.

Fr. Philip (on my toes?!)

YES TO CHILDREN”IN THE WOMB!

The baby’s life in the womb is an astonishing odyssey of growth and development. As science makes clear, it is at fertilisation that a new, unique and genetically complete human being comes into existence. From that moment onwards, each of us did grow and develop into a human being. We grew and developed as a human being.
18 – 21 Days - after conception, before many women even realise that they are pregnant, the baby’s heart is beating.
At 8 weeks every organ to be found in a fully grown adult person is already formed.
At 11 weeks fingerprints and fingernails can be clearly seen.
At 12 weeks the baby’s lips open and close. The baby can turn her or his head and move around the womb.
At 16 weeks the baby reacts to sound, sucks, swallows and yawns.
At 18 weeks most mothers feel the baby moving. The baby exercises her or his developing muscles by pushing with the feet and head. The baby now sucks her or his thumb.
At 24 weeks the baby continues moving, hearing and perhaps even dreaming.
At 30 – 40 weeks the baby, if protected from harm, will continue to grow bigger and stronger until it is time to be born.

Weekly Bulletin 27th & 28th October

At the Liturgy Group

From time to time you may hear (in the notices read at Mass) that the Liturgy group is meeting on this day or that. We do try to meet about every two to three weeks.

We’ve looked at the singing in the Church and have decided to buy Hymn books and have the corresponding hymn numbers up on a board. More on this later! The P. A. system came in for a bit of consideration recently too.

At the last meeting one of the other topics for discussion was how to engage/involve our new young families during Mass. One way is to have a ‘Family Mass’, (the name is a bit misleading because every Mass is a family Mass) where the Liturgy is geared for Children. Many say that when the Mass is simplified for the children, it often makes more sense for the adults.

Another option is to have a Children’s ‘Liturgy of the Word’ over in the Parish Centre. This would mean the Children going over to the Pastoral Centre at the Opening Prayer of the Mass and returning at the Offertory.

Sometimes the second option works well for the Adults as the Children leave and those left in the Church can have a more adult liturgy. Maybe we could do both, have a children’s/family Mass at 10 and have the Children go to the Parish Centre for the Liturgy of the Word at the 11.30.

We’d need to get Parents to help and train. So we’re having a little gathering on Sun 18 Nov after 10 Mass to have a chat with parents and get a few opinions on what way to go.

The Liturgy in the Diocese has resources that we can use. I’ll be asking other parishes what they do too.

Fr. Philip (Child at heart!)

Weekly Bulletin 13th & 14th October

When God seems to be absent!!

I recently received an email on similar lines. Apparently the famous Billy Graham’s daughter was being interviewed about the attack on the twin towers and the direct question was put to her. “How could God let something like nine eleven happen?” Her answer was quite remarkable. Anne Graham said “I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we’ve been telling God to get out of our Schools, to get out of our Government and to get out of our lives. And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?”

Then Ann mentioned an American campaigner who didn’t want prayer in schools and the school Boards agreed. This poor lady was murdered sometime later. Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school…. And we said OK. The Bible says thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbour as yourself.

She continued: Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn’t spank our children when they misbehave because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem. And we said OK. Now we’re asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don’t know right from wrong, and why it doesn’t bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves. Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out. I think it has a great deal to do with “WE REAP WHAT WE SOW”.

And Ann concluded her remarkable answer by saying, Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world is going to hell. Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible says.

The email ended with a challenge for the reader to question themselves about how easy it is to talk about God in private and not in public,

Fr. Philip Adm (Worth a thought or two!?)

Thank you for the €1,339 which you donated to last Sunday’s collection for the Support of Priests of the Parish (& Dioceses) and for the Share Collection which amounted to €940.

Annual Day for Life:
The Irish Episcopal Conference has asked that today will mark the beginning of a special month of prayer dedicated to the theme ‘Choose Life!’ Day for Life is the day in the Church’s year dedicated to celebrating and upholding the dignity of human life. The Church teaches that life should be protected and nurtured from conception to natural death.
Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor once wrote that we need to build "an ethos of life that protects persons from womb to tomb - especially the most vulnerable" Consequently; the Catholic community gathers every year to pray for all who care for and nurture life from its very beginnings and growth to its final years. We also pray for legislators and those in authority that they respect and protect human life in all its stages.
Parishes and individuals are invited to pray a special ‘Prayer for the Child in the Womb’ during Masses throughout the month of prayer which will end on the Feast of All the Saints of Ireland on 6th November next. The prayer asks us to open our hearts to welcome every child as a unique and wonderful gift, and to help those who make our laws to uphold the uniqueness and sacredness of every human life from the moment of conception to natural death.
Copies of both the “Prayer for the Child in the Womb” and the Irish catholic Bishop’s Conference booklet on “Day for Life” are available at our entrance doors.

There will be an outdoor collection for the Peter Mc. Verry Trust after all Masses this weekend. This trust supports young homeless people to break the cycle of homelessness and move towards independent living.

Parish Ministry Volunteering Days,
“It is necessary to improve pastoral structures in such a way that the co-responsibility of all the members of the people of God in their entirety is gradually promoted. This demands a change in mind-set, particularly concerning lay people. (Pope Benedict, Pastoral Convention, Diocese of Rome, 26th May 2009)

Miraculous Medals.
Congratulations to all our Olympic medal winners, we admire the hard work and effort that goes into all the training. The Paralympics are about to start and some years ago Ireland hosted the Special Olympics. I remember the Special Olympics as an occasion when the whole country welcomed contestants from the ‘four corners of the Globe’. The Country was at its best and everyone seemed to put their best foot forward.
On radio recently I heard a clear definition of each. In the Paralympics, the contestants have some physical disability either hereditary or due to some accident/injury. In the Special Olympics the contestants have intellectual difficulties. Some years ago I watched a film about the beginning of the Special Olympics. The ‘High Point’ of the Factional film was when one of the Contestants noticed that a fellow competitor had fallen on a hurdle. He promptly stopped and helped his fellow competitor up and they ran to the finish line, crossing it with hands held high! The ‘Good Samaritan’ got a medal for his remarkable understanding of the Spirit of the Olympics. ‘The important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle, the essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well’ (Baron de Coubertin).
Thus I find myself a little uncomfortable with special development units to ensure that next Olympics we’ll get more medals. Picking specialist sports and giving wonderful training, expert nutrition and state of the art facilities etc etc, seems to me to be more interested in winning Medals than participating or getting our younger people involved in sport.
Miracles happen when people feel cherished as a result of participation not success, when a child discovers a hidden talent, and, when all the children of the Nation are cherished equally!

Fr. Philip Adm

HOW TO REAR A DELINQUENT.
The following is a list that was given to me many years ago, I re-discovered it recently. It’s worth a read.

1. Begin at infancy to give your child everything s/he wants; s/he will then grow up believing that world owes him/her a living.
2. When s/he picks up bad language, length; they will think it’s fun.
3. Avoid the use of the word wrong. S/he may develop a guilt complex.
4. Pick up everything they leave lying around. Arrange to do everything for them so that they will gain the experience in shifting responsibility for everything onto someone else.
5. Give him/her all the money they want. Never let them earn anything. Why should they have life as hard as you did!
6. Satisfy their craving for food, drink and comfort. See that his/her every desire is satisfied. Denial may lead to harmful frustration!
7. Take their part against neighbours, teachers and police. They are all prejudiced against your child.
8. Never give him/her any spiritual training. Wait until he/she is 21 and then let him/her decide for himself.
9. Prepare for life of grief, because you very likely to have it.

WHAT WE SEE IN CHURCH
Pyx: A round container for the consecrated host. A large pyx is kept in the TABERNACLE to hold the large host that is used for exposition and Benediction in the monstrance. A smaller one is used by the priest, deacon, or other ministers of Holy Communion when taking Communion to people outside the church, especially the sick and housebound.
Sacristy: The room where priests and servers prepare themselves for worship.
Sanctuary: The name we give to the space in a church where the altar, lectern and priest's chair are placed.
Sanctuary Lamp: The lamp which is kept burning near the TABERNACLE to show that the Christ is present to us in the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle. The lamp is very often red, in a bracket attached to the wall, or it can hang from the ceiling.
Stole: A type of ‘scarf’ worn by priests and deacons, which is a sign of their ministry. The priest’s stole is worn around the neck. The deacon's stole is worn across the left shoulder and the ends are attached to each other on the right side. It matches the chasuble, or the deacon's dalmatic and is the same colour.
Surplice: A white, linen garment worn over the soutane or cassock.
Tabernacle: The decorated, secure place often made of metal in which we keep safe the consecrated bread so that it may be available when people who are sick or dying need to receive it, and for adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Sometimes it is covered with a veil that matches the liturgical colour of the day.
Thurible: The container for the burning charcoal and incense.
It is usually suspended at the end of three chains so that it can be swung and also opened easily.
Vestments: The special clothes which are worn by priests, deacons and servers during the liturgy. For example, ALB, CHASUBLE, STOLE. –

Lough Derg Pilgrimage:
Ancient and Modern, a place of peace, healing and reconciliation. The Three Day pilgrimage season goes on until the 15th of August. Full details are available on the website www.loughderg.org or telephone 071 9861652 from 8.00am to 9.00pm daily.

Weekly Bulletin 4th & 5th August

I broke out in Handcuffs!
I was listening to the Radio recently and heard an interview with an American man talking about his ‘drinking problem’ and how he got to change his behaviour. As he put it “I discovered was allergic to alcohol, when I drank, I broke out in handcuffs”. It got me to reflect on how much it took Him to reflect on the pattern of drinking and ending up in ‘handcuffs’.

So, here’s a little reflection on some experiences. When I travel on an airplane, I really dislike when the passenger behind me grabs the top of my seat to assist them in getting out of their seat. My seat pops back and forward! However, when I try to get out of MY seat, it takes all my strength and memory not to grab the seat in front as I move across. Reflection: even when we know that the behaviour of others is unpleasant for us, we often find it difficult not to do the same to them.

More about airplanes: I often heard people advising me (for my ears)to hold my nose and blow on the way up in the plane, and to hold my nose and swallow on the way down. Some years ago I did some scuba diving. In the training, it was explained that when we dive there is increased pressure on the eardrum (and it can be sore!). So we hold our nose and blow to pump air into the middle ear and equalise the pressure in each side of the eardrum. Reflection: it often pays to listen to good advice even if you don’t understand it.

A friend advised me not to throw out my old sun cream but to use it as after sun. Reflection: often there is a 2nd and a 3rd use for things we throw out.

Fr. Philip Adm.

Prayer for the Canonization of Blessed John XX111
O God who raised Angelo Giusseppe Roncalli to the dignity of the priesthood, and subsequently to the dignity of Archbishop of Areopolis, and subsequently to the dignity of being Vicar of Christ, Pope John XX111, thus showing the world a model of simplicity in greatness, grant that soon he may be canonized, raised to the honours of the altar, and grant that he may continually intercede for the poor of this world, and the reception of your love and mercy by all humankind.

WHAT WE SEE IN CHURCH

Humeral Veil: A long; rectangular garment, with a clasp at the front, worn by the priest or deacon when carrying a CIBORIUM or MONSTRANCE containing the Blessed Sacrament, especially on Holy Thursday evening and during Blessed Sacrament Processions.
Incense: One of the gifts the 3 wise men brought to Jesus. It looks a bit like large grains of brown sugar, which when sprinkled on burning charcoal, gives off clouds of sweet smelling smoke. It is contained in a BOAT; so called because of its shape.
Lectionary: A large book which contains the Readings from the Bible we need for the Liturgy of the Word at Mass. There are three of them:
The Red one for Sundays, Advent, Christmas time, Lent and Eastertide.
The biggest one is the Blue one: with all the readings for weekdays and Saints feast days and the Beige/Brown one: with readings for baptism, confirmation, funerals, weddings and so on.
Missal: The book which contains all the prayers of the Mass.
Monstrance: A special vessel for showing the Blessed Sacrament for prayer. It is made of precious metal and sometimes has 'rays' coming out from the centre.
Nave: The part of the church where the people sit. The passageways are called AISLES.
Pall: A square board covered in white linen to cover the chalice or paten.
It is useful to keep flies out of them.
Paschal Candle: A very tall candle, blessed at Easter and often to be seen standing next to the baptism font. It represents the risen Christ, the light of the world.
Paten: There are two types: One is a thin, round metal plate on which is sometimes placed the priest’s host. Others are like metal dishes with sides on them in which we can hold many hosts.
Purificator: A white linen cloth (usually folded up and with a little red cross on it) which is used to clean (‘purify’) the chalice and patens and ciborium.
More next week!

Weekly Bulletin 21st & 22nd July

Dear IEC2012 pilgrim,
It is now one month since the Congress finished. What a wonderful week in June we had. There was a great deal of planning over the last 3 years. A Theology document was published. A two year pastoral programme of preparation was presented to every Diocese in Ireland and what a great response we received with so many people in Ireland and overseas participating. Our Congress Bell and Icons visited every Diocese in Ireland and also travelled to the UK, to Lourdes and to Rome. Our website is in 7 language versions with over 150 pages per site received over 2,529,600 page views. We recruited 2,000 volunteers and provided the training that was needed to run the week long programme. Staff and committees planned every detail and then worked with many suppliers to ensure that everything was in place before the 6th June. Our registration office registered over 95,000 pilgrims for the official programme. Over 20,000 additional people participated in the Dublin Pilgrim Walk and the host Church programme around the city. Millions joined us by watching the broadcasts on RTE, Salt and Light, EWTN and the many other TV, Radio and Web broadcasts.

Our hope is that you were enriched in your participation and that you will have discovered (or rediscovered) at firsthand what can be achieved when people work generously together for a common project.

Our links to the new information we have on our website will bring back memories of the week to you. We are now planning the production of a DVD of the opening and closing ceremony which will available in the autumn. You can still purchase the Congress medal and a number of other items; check our website for further details.
Thank you to our committees, our volunteers, our sponsors, supporters and our staff. Most importantly, thank you for being with us and making the 50th International Eucharistic Congress such a wonderful experience.

Yours sincerely,
Anne Griffin, General Manager, IEC2012

An interview with God

I dreamed I had an interview with God.
“So you would like to interview me?” God asked.
“If you have the time”, I said.
God smiled, “My time is eternity.”
“What questions do you have in mind for me?”
“What surprises you about humankind?”
God answered......
“That they get bored with childhood, they rush to grow up, and then long to be children again,”
“That they lose their health to make money.....
and then lose their money to restore their health”.
“That by thinking anxiously about the future, they forget the present, such that they live in neither the present nor the future”.
“That they live as if they will never die, and die as if they had never lived.”
God’s hand took mine and we were silent for a while.
And then I asked...............
“As a parent, what are some of life’s lessons you want your children to learn?
“To learn they cannot make anyone love them. All they can do is let themselves to be loved.”
“To learn that it is not good to compare themselves to others.”
“To learn to forgive by practising forgiveness.”
“To learn that it takes only a few seconds to open profound wounds in those they love, and it can
take many years to heal them.”
“To learn that a rich person is not one who has most, but is one who needs the least”
“To learn that two people can look at the same thing and see it differently.”
“To learn that it is not enough that they forgive one another, but they must also forgive themselves.”
“Thank you for your time” I said humbly.”
“Is there anything else you would like your children to know”?
GOD smiled and said—“Just that I am here ..........always”

Thought this made sense! Fr. Philip

Weekly Bulletin 9th & 10th June

Equality of the Sexes
I picked up a recent article from the internet about the advantages of being a man. It’s quite funny, but as usual it also has a lot to say.
• Your last name stays put.
• The garage is yours.
• Wedding plans take care of themselves.
• Car mechanics tell you the truth.
• You don’t care if no-one notices your new haircut.
• Same work.....more pay.
• Your pals can be trusted never to trap you with “So, notice anything different?”
• New shoes don’t cut, blister, or mangle your feet.
• One mood, all the time.
• Phone conversations are over in 30 seconds flat.
• A week’s holiday requires one suitcase.
• You can leave the hotel bed unmade.
• Yon don’t have to clean the house/apartment if the maid is coming.
• You can drop by to see a friend without having to bring ‘a little gift’.
• You can quietly watch a football game with a friend for hours without thinking “He must be mad at me”.
• You almost never have strap problems in public.
• The same hairstyle last years, maybe decades.
• You can do Christmas shopping for 25 relatives, on Dec 24th, in 45 minutes.
Have you recognised yourself: be you man or woman!?
How did you get there? What keeps you there? Do you want to change? And if so, how can you?
Fr. Philip Adm (Still musing!)

CHURCH SPEAKERS IN THE PARISH CENTRE
It’s a pity to see parents with their children standing in the porch during Mass. Why not pop over to the Parish Pastoral Centre if you feel your children need a little break? With the help of our newly installed speakers you will still be able to hear what is happening in the church. Feel free to return to the church after your children have had a little break.
