Weekly Bulletin 30th & 31st March

CELEBRATING BAPTISM
This Eastertide (between Easter Sunday and Pentecost) Milltown Parish will be part of a Pilot programme for Baptism preparation. About 10 other parishes in the Diocese are involved in the Pilot. I jokingly call it the ‘bells and whistles version’! It is, of course, much more.

Baptism is about GRACE. It celebrates our beauty and dignity in the eyes of God. It’s about rejoicing in the graced individual each one of us is in Christ.

Baptism is about COMMUNITY. It welcomes each person as a member of the Christian community. It is the first step of our entering into the community of faith.

Baptism is about NOW. It is about who I am and who we are, our new identity in Christ – much more than a distant memory. It is what we try to live out of each day, individually and together.

We are trying to bring out this meaning more and more. And so we are developing a new way of preparing for Baptism and celebrating Baptism.

In this new way, we are putting a big emphasis on
-The role of the whole Christian community – because Baptism is about the community welcoming a cherished new member;

-The role of the parents – because Baptism is about the gift they are to their children and what they have to offer in their children’s growth as Christians.

Weekly Bulletin 23rd & 24th March

A week and a Day
Last week I spoke about the Easter Triduum: you may remember that the Triduum starts on Holy Thursday and ends with The Vigil on Easter Saturday night, thus no opening or closing hymn on Good Friday.

The most significant Mass in the year is the Easter Vigil! We hope to have an infant Baptism this year too! (If there is an Adult Baptism then it would always take place at the Vigil).

After the long Lent we move to Eastertide. We’ve had no Alleluias during Lent: you may have noticed that there is no Alleluia for the Gospel or Gloria except St Patrick’s Day! So we go all out for the Easter Vigil and Eastertide. We celebrate each day for a week as if it were Easter Sunday. Yes, we even say/sing the Gloria for the Eight days from Easter Sunday till the Following Sunday (A week and a Day The Octave of Easter). The Easter Vigil ends with Go in Peace Alleluia Alleluia, Thanks be to God Alleluia Alleluia! And, yes the double Alleluia is on for the whole Octave.

Having survived Lent (in sombre mode) we have Eastertide to rejoice in the resurrection of Christ. In Eastertide White vestments are worn (the top colour, so to speak), we also have two New Testament readings, not the usual one Old Testament one New. And of course Eastertide is the same length as Lent.

In Milltown we are assisting the Diocese with a Pilot programme for Baptism Preparation. We’ll have the usual Baptisms on the first weekend for April and May, but we are also offering the Pilot programme which is the ‘Bells and Whistle’ one, during Eastertide with the Baptism on Pentecost Sunday May 19th during the Sunday Morning Mass.

Weekly Bulletin 16th & 17th March

Pope Francis
Apparently it’s Pope Francis and not Francis I, maybe to say Francis I would presume that future Popes might take the name, which could be presumptuous, I suppose? Either way, let’s pray for God’s blessing on him and the whole Church.
We’ll certainly see lots of Pope Francis during the Easter Ceremonies. While it’s still Lent, it can be difficult to think of Holy week, but Lent leads up to Holy week. In fact, Lent only makes sense because of Holy week. So here’s a few pointers for the Easter Ceremonies in Milltown.
Palms will blessed at the beginning of Mass on Palm Sunday. We’ll have a procession from the side door (near the Parish Centre) around to the front door and into the Church. Psalm will be available at the Side door only, when there is a procession.
Lent actually ends on the Wed of Holy week, because we enter the Easter Triduum. The Triduum starts on Holy Thursday with the Mass of the Last Supper and ends with the Vigil on Sat night. We process from Holy Thursday Mass into the Parish Centre to the Altar of repose. On Good Friday we continue with the Passion Ceremony. There is no opening hymn because we’re not starting something new, we are just continuing the Triduum which began on Thur. and there’s no closing hymn because, we’re not finished; we just take a sort of rest until the Vigil on Sat night.
Let’s do so with a lively faith, as the prayer says. And remember our new Pope in our prayers along the way.

Fr. Philip Adm

Weekly Bulletin 9th & 10th March

Lies Damn, Damn Lies and Statistics!
At the beginning of Feb I wrote an article about School patronage. I referred to the fact that Milltown Parish doesn’t have a Parish/Catholic school. The Irony being that the majority of the families with children of Primary school going age come from the Mount St Anne’s area, where the previous Primary and Secondary Schools were.

At a national level there is considerable interest in Schools and their patronage. The numbers of children under 12 in Ireland is on the increase. The issue was also raised at the Donnybrook deanery meeting which took place on Mon last.

When there is only one National school in a parish and it is under Catholic Patronage, then there is a considerable responsibility on the Patron to cater for other faiths. If the school has extra places when the Parish Children are taken care of, then any other pupils are actually entitled to a place (subject to certain policies and E. U. regulations). And some parishes have huge schools that are half empty, and thus find it very difficult to make’ financial ends meet’!

Our Archbishop looked at this issue very soon after becoming appointed to the Diocese. In many ways he began this conversation.

But of course, it is much more complicated than this. We need to keep ourselves informed. Some elements in our Society seem to want to remove Catholic Schools from the scene completely. So please do read the attached article which is very interesting.

Weekly Bulletin 2nd & 3rd March

Makes one weak!

Many moons ago I say a notice in small chapel which said “Seven days without prayer makes One weak”. It’s a nice pun. Obviously a whole week without prayer is a long time. There are many opportunities for us to get a ‘jump start’ for prayer. In our Schools the pupils are advised to take up something and to give up something! Maybe give up sweets or sugar, and take up praying a little more.

On Monday we begin the ‘Novena of Grace’ (4th to 12th March), Fr. Kevin from Clonskeagh and myself are going to do the Lions share between us. So, we’re doing it with our twinned parish!
One particular phrase, from the Novena prayer, always strikes me. “but if what I ask is not for the glory of God or for the good of my soul, obtain for me what is most conducive to both.”

Now, imagine what a difference it would make to us all, if we used this criterion for all our prayer and maybe even for our decisions in life. We will have pieces of paper to write petitions on. These will be brought up to the Altar during Mass. So, think about what you would like to pray for, or whom you’d like to pray for. Of course it would be a good idea to make a decision to attend as many of the masses as possible. Fr Kevin and I have look at the readings of the Day for the week, so you can go to either church and hopefully it will be similar.

With the Conclave happening very soon it would be great to think that many of us were praying for the Cardinals and for the new Pope! Of course a Novena is NINE days, don’t mind the Week or Weak!

Fr. Philip Adm (Strong in Faith?)

Weekly Bulletin 23rd & 24th February

Big News
Next Sunday the Sacrament of the Sick (anointing) will be administered during the 11.30 Mass. We try to do this annually, on a Sunday near the feast of ‘Our Lady of Lourdes’.
Many people will remember the ‘Sacrament of the Sick’ as ‘Extreme Uncion’ the last anointing. The norm was that the sacrament was given only to people who were in Danger of death due to Illness or old Age.

New norms were promulgated after the Second Vatican Council with final norms being published in 1972. The present day norms suggest that “those whose health is seriously impaired by sickness or old age receive this sacrament”

There is a reference to psychological health too. You don’t have to be brought in on a stretcher to present for the Sacrament! And don’t forget, as with all sacraments, those who receive them are required to respond/co-operate with God’s grace. A bit of preparation is a good idea too. What form of healing am I looking for? What can I do to co-operate with the sacrament i.e. bring about my own healing. It might be going to bed earlier and eating my 5 portion of fruit and veg a day. If I’m looking for healing of memories, then in what way am I willing to try to heal my own history.

Maybe there’s a neighbour who would like a lift, could you offer to bring them?

Two weeks ago we had a collection after Masses for the Mary Aikenhead Day Centre, Donnybrook (lots of healing/caring going on there!). The collection amounted to €8426.47, magnificent amount. Sr Marie wrote to say ‘thank you’.

So let’s prepare for the Sacrament of healing for next week.

Fr. Philip Adm

Thank you for the €1,491 which you donated to last Sunday’s collection for the Support of Priests of the Parish (& Dioceses) and for the Share Collection which amounted to €1074.

Condolences to the families and friends of the late Bridget Freeman and Maurice Colman. We also offer our condolences to the family and friends of the late Margaret McCrea whose funeral Mass took place here during the last week.
