Weekly Bulletin 19th & 20th February 2011

I left School in 1978 having studied Economics in my Leaving Certificate. The Big noise at the time in the Banking world was the ‘Irish Trust Bank’ which was closed by the Central Bank on Sat 27 March 1976. The date is courtesy of a book that I read recently. Something Rotten Irish Banking Scandals. The book goes on to list Banking Scandals: the Gallagher Group and Merchant Banking (A property Bum and Bust story). The Taxpayer ended up being hit for lots of losses. Oh by the way there were also payments to politicians just to add sauce to the mix, here and there!
`Later in my Seminary Days I heard about a neighbour who had to postpone her wedding because of the collapse of PMPA, not sure of the details here but I do remember paying a PMPA levy on my Motor insurance for years (maybe I still do, more Sean Citizen bail-out)
Next in line is the Insurance Corporation of Ireland, which one of our big banks part owned. Insurance claims go on for a long time after the premiums are paid, if you undercut all the competition in premiums then there’s no money in the pot to pay out the claims. So, the Taxpayer did it for them!
The Golden Circle continues into the Ansbacker affair with all sorts of things happening in the Cayman Islands. This looks like a ‘special’ bank for ‘special’ people. At the time I was looking for a Philips-backer, the only offshore I would have looked for was Irelands Eye!
There was a good spat between RTE and now retiring (I think) Politician who worked at the National Irish Bank. The court found that RTE hadn’t proven its case but that the politician’s reputation wasn’t damaged either. The case came to light due to Charlie Bird and George Lee. No Taxman bail-out here, although some would say that the TV Licence holder probably got stung.
Later we had the D.I.R. T. Scandal, where it looks like the banks shared their greed with the public, and many of the public decided to the get in on the action. The taxman was short changed here big time.
Top of the class goes to John Rusnak who lost $691millon, followed by Foreign Exchange systematic Over Charging by one of the Irish ‘Biggies’. And last but not least is the Faldor Scandal Bank executives and shares.
All of the above happened before 2006 so think what is coming down the tracks at us now.

Original Sin – Alive and Well.
